Rare birds

Some protected bird species hatch at the territory of UAB „Akvilegija“. Still some species hatch in the surroundings of the fish farm  and are closely connected by nutrition relations with farm ponds. 

Great bittern (lot. Botaurus stellaris)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book. Bird of the heron family Ardeide, approximately 75 cm in length, and  a body mass of 1kg. Buffy-brown with dark spots, puffy plumage. Big head, thick neck, massive beak. It usually inhabits reed beds by water. 

The whooper swan (lot. Cygnus cygnus)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book. A bird of family Anseriformes,  body mass  of approximately 7-10 kg.  Long neck, short legs, webbed feet with long fingers. Bottom part of the beak white and sides yellow, tip black. Generally swims with a straight neck. Loud trumpeting call. 

Greylag goose (lot. Anser anser)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book. A species of order Anseriformes,  approximately 75 cm in length, and  a body mass of  3-4 kg. Greyish-brown colour. Light head, neck and front edge of wings. Redish beak and feet. Loud cackling call.Sparsely breeds in the whole territory of Lithuania, approximately 3-5 pairs breed at the farm “Akvilegija”. 

Western marsh harrier (lot. Circus aeruginosus)

Bird of family Acipitridae, 40-60 cm in length, and  a body mass of 0,23-1 kg. Long wings, legs and tail. Fly sprightly and lightly. Every year up to 6 pairs breed at the territory of „Akvilegija“ ponds. 

The spotted crake (lot. Porzana pozana)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book. Upper body part is greenish-brown with dark spots and white flecks.Shoulder plumage with oblong white spots. Neck and breast greenish, with dense white spots. Rather wide dark barring on the sides.

Common Tern (lot. Sterna hirundo)

A bird of  the family Sternidae.Body length approximately 35 cm, body mass  100–120 g. Top of the head black, back and wings light grey, belly greyish. Short legs. Tail with deep excision. Sporadic pairs breed at the farm „Akvilegija“ 

Red-backed shrike (lot. Lanius collurio)

A bird of  Laniidae family. Body length 16–36 cm. Back of the male brownish, top of the head grey, a black stripe from bill through the eye. Back of the female  greyish brown, top of the head  brown, underparts whittish with vermiculated transverse pattern.  5–10 pairs breed at the territory of „Akvilegija“ farm. 

Bearded Reedling (lot. Panurus biarmicus)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book. A bird of  the family Panuridae. Top of the male head and neck grey. Back, upper tail and tail bright brown.Wings blackish- brown. Triangle black spot „moustache“ extends from beak base and eyes down.  Lower part  lightly red, undertail black. Beak yellow. Legs black. Female head brown without „moustache“. The Bearded Reedling are regularly met at the farm „Akvilegija“ 

The black kite (lot. Milvus migrans)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book. A bird of the family Accipitridae. Whole body is dark brown except back with very blurry stripes. Head is light, roan. Middle steering feather with blurry barring. Regularly 1-2 pairs of birds feed in and  breed outside  „Akvilegija“ ponds.  

White-tailed eagle (lot. Haliaetus albicilla)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book.A large  bird berlonging to  the buzzard subfamily from the family Accipitridae. It is the biggest bird of prey in Lithuania. It measures  70–92 cm in length. The wingspan is 2–2,45 m in length. Male‘s body mass is 3,5–5 kg, female‘s  4–7 kg.  Live up to  20 years. A rather rare bird in the Europe except Nordic countries. Regularly 1-2 pairs of birds feed in and  breed outside  „Akvilegija“ ponds.  

Black stork (lot. Ciconias nigra)

Included in Lithuanian Red Book. A bird of  stork family. A bit smaller than the white stork.  Body height is 52–58 cm , approximately  3 kg of body masst. Head, neck, dewlap, upper part of body black with greenish-red metallic brilliance. Breast, belly, undertail and lower part of wings white. Beak, legs and ring around eyes red. Sporadic birds feed in and  breed outside  „Akvilegija“ ponds.
